The iPad was the first successful handheld tablet. Some found it a larger version of an iPhone, but soon the concept was accepted as a separate computing category. Key difference with a laptop was the delination towards content consumption. Typical usage was web browsing on a larger screen, video calling, and content consumptions through a larger category of apps desigend for the larger screen.
A separate model contains LTE/4G cellular connectivity. Standard connectivity is WiFi and Bluetooth based.

This pen tablet pc is in many respects an improved version of the Fujitsu 3400. The VGA port has been replaced by a serial port. The Intel 400MHz Pentium III is replaced by an ultra low voltage 500MHz Intel Celeron. It is equipped with a 15GB hard disk instead of a 6GB disk. As special feature there are three screen options: an indoor-only XGA display, a indoor/outdoor SVGA display with anti-reflective coating, and a SVGA reflective display for outdoor use.

The ThinkPad is a line of business-oriented laptop computers, originally designed and marketed by IBM. From its 1st release in 1992 on it has been a successful and robust device with a distinct appearance. Reliable enough to be used by NASA in its space mission to repair the Hubble telescope. The early systems use a Intel 80486-chipset, have a monochromatic display and run Windows 3.1 on top of IBM PC-DOS. Later versions followed the common developments by using Windows95, Pentium processor, VGA color display, RAM, IDE Harddisk, all increasing in capacity, speed and/or size. The model 755CEX as shown is somewhere in between this development, not produced in large quantities, but typical for the state of art around 1994 (see specifications). In 2005 IBM sold it production of PC's and laptops to the Chinese manufacturer Lenovo.

Portable Computer, Z80 based, Operating System CP/M. It consists of a monitor with a Z80 CPU and a computer with a Z80 CPU.

Tandy Corporation made one of the first personal computer to look like a laptop (in the days that laptops were non existing). It was widely used by journalists. The Tandy 200 was powered by a 80C85A CMOS microprocessor. The CPU was low power and enables to use as battery operated device.
The LCD screen could handle 40 columns of text. Graphics could also be displayed in a 240 by 128 pixel matrix on the screen. The software included Microsoft Basic and the Multiplan spreadsheet in ROM.
